December Speaker Meeting – In Person at UUFE

Doors open at 6:15 for members and guests to mingle and catch up with each other.  Refreshments will be provided. Presentation starts at 7pm.  Members, Guests and the Public are welcome to attend.

Topic: African Safari

Colin and his wife Cheryl McNaught will share some of their experiences after their two weeks visiting Zimanga, a private game reserve in South Africa, and Chobe National Park in Botswana. Both locations were geared specifically towards photography. The presentation will show the many varieties of birdlife and animals they encountered and discuss the unique but different support provided for photographers at both locations. Colin will also discuss some of the post-processing techniques used to make final images, development of ‘low-key’ images and the use of ‘pre-capture’ to acquire images of birds in flight.

“Colin was born in North-East England where he gained a Masters in Electrical Engineering at Cambridge University. He emigrated to California in his mid-twenties and had a 40-year career involving real-time computing and Medical Imaging. One of his projects was designing the hardware and software for the 3-D image display system for General Electric’s first commercial MRI scanner.

Colin’s interest in photography was sparked when he was very young by his Dad who let him use his Kodak bellows 110 camera. He was fascinated by developing prints in the bathroom (chemical trays in the bath) and built an enlarger to make larger B&W prints. As a teen he took  35mm color slides with a Hanimex camera, documenting his travels. Colin’s first SLR camera was a Canon which he used on family vacations. On retirement in 2014, his interest in photography was rekindled when traveling for several years with his wife Cheryl in their RV. They published a travel photography blog covering their travels in the US, Canada, England, Bahrain, Malaysia and Singapore and recently returned from a two weeks photo-safari in South Africa and Botswana.”
